The Mentoring Project

Date Published 9th August 2017

The mentoring project was created for Paulet High School and involved Y12 students in the sixth form mentoring Y8 students about higher education.

Higher Horizons+ welcomed 30 students from Paulet High School and Sixth Form College to Keele University for a day of advice, guidance and academic taster sessions.

The event celebrated the end of the The Mentoring Project 2016/17, a project which saw Y12 students in the school mentor Y8s. We aimed to improve knowledge of university and life after school for both year groups. Further aims included helping students grow in confidence and build communications skills.

Learners visited Keele Hall for a Heritage Tour and attended a session with Dr Michael Fay. Michael’s session, ‘Morality and Murder’, reinforced the importance of critical thinking, and provided an open platform for debate of ethical principles. After the session, Michael Fay said: “I thought that was a great group of students and I enjoyed the opportunity to get involved. I liked how some of the younger students were firm in their opinions. Hopefully having a sixth form mentor has provided a strong and encouraging role model.”

Throughout the day students received insights into student life from current Student Ambassadors. The Ambassadors led a session on Student Life, explaining what university is like from a student’s point of view. Later, there was a practical workshop on progressing to college and higher education.

The day ended with a Recognition Ceremony for all the students. Mentors and mentees received certificates in recognition of their hard work during the project.

We look forward to working with Paulet High School and Sixth Form College in the future. Thank you to Ahsan Ashraf for all his hard work supporting and coordinating the project. Mr Ashraf said: “What a memorable day you organised for us! Thank you!”
